Cyber Crime in India has increased by 300% in last one year : Subimal
Way2barak, March 18 : Subimal Bhattacharjee well known global cyber security expert spoke at the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Tufts University Medford in Boston. The lecture was organised by The Hitachi Center for Technology and international Affairs as part of the Hitachi Centre lecture series. Shri Bhattacharjee’s lecture was delivered on Thursday, 16 March 2023 on ‘Cyber Policy in a New Age India.’ It was attended by faculty and students and also a few industry experts.
Shri Bhattacharjee spoke on the whole range of technology issues and it’s importance in furthering India’s democracy and governance. In India, Technology laws exist since 2000; however, with the advent of smart phones, and with wide internet penetration, the reach of social media, the landscape has changed and more people feel empowered with the usage of UPI based digital payments and also usage of Aadhar for targeted deliveries to the beneficiaries. Over a few years, there has been an exponential rise in cyber-crimes – about 300% in the last one year in India alone and how India is addressing cyber security concerns. Shri Bhattacharjee also felt on the growing importance of digital technology as part of India’s diplomacy and the G20 leadership is trying to empower the global south with cyber cooperation: he also spoke about the importance of strategic cyber cooperation many countries including the U.S., Japan, EU and Australia. He touched upon how social media regulations are focused on due diligence and the principle of self regulation in many efforts.

Shri Subimal Bhattacharjee hailing from Assam is currently a policy advisor and technology issues. He has been country head of the US defense and security corporation General Dynamics in India. He has been an expert for UN panels and also a member of the research advisory network under the Global Commission on Internet Governance (2014-16) headed by former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt. He was also a former governing body member of Assam Don Bosco University in Guwahati India and an Independent Director at Centrum Capital Limited.
Incidentally Shri Bhattacharjee is the second Indian speaker this year to speak at the Fletcher School after Shashi Tharoor MP who was also a graduate of this school.
