Covid protocol compromised during idol immersion in Karimganj
Oct. 28: Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Durga Puja, 2020 came to an end. Along with the rest of the country, Durga Puja was celebrated throughout Barak Valley. However, due to the imposition of restrictions by the state government, Durga Puja was a low-key affair this year. Restrictions were more stringent in Cachar district although Hailakandi and Karimganj went with the SOP declared by the Assam Government.
Idol Immersion procession in Karimganj
However, during the idol immersion ceremony (during Dashami of Durga Puja), Covid protocol was compromised in Karimganj. Social distancing and wearing of face masks could not be seen during the immersion procession. It was a regular affair like the previous years. A sea of people assembled on both sides of the road through which the idols passed.
Inspite of strict restrictions, huge number of people went along with their respective idols playing music in a high volume and dancing to their heart’s content. It was indeed a risky scene given the prevalence of coronavirus. The immersion took place in the river near Karimganj Kali Bari.
A somewhat similar scene could also be noticed during the 2nd day of idol immersion in Silchar when Covid protocol and the district SOP on the conduct of Durga Puja was violated by many of the Puja Committees. Violating the guidelines, many used music system during the immersion in Silchar. Instead of the permitted number, puja committees were also seen to move with around 100 people along with their idols.
