COVID-19: India becomes 3rd country to cross 20 lakh positive cases
August 6: India’s coronavirus tally breached the 20 lakh-mark on Thursday, while recoveries surged to 13.7 lakh. India is only the third country after the United States and Brazil to have hit this grim milestone. India saw a single-day spike of 56,282 infections, taking its Covid-19 caseload to 19,64,536, while the death toll climbed to 40,699 with 904 new fatalities being reported in a 24-hour span, as per the data provided by the the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday. As per covid19india.org, India recorded 20,25,409 cases on Thursday night.
India recorded its first covid-19 case on 30 January and the disease burden started growing. The country’s covid count reached 1 million on July 16 which further doubled to 2 million in three weeks. Thursday was the eighth consecutive day that cases have increased by more than 50,000. The country has reported around 40,700 deaths so far which is the world’s fifth-biggest total.
