Part Time Teachers in GC College, Prof Dilip Dey Writes to the CM

way2barak, March 12 : In order to fulfill the educational needs of the Barak Valley, and specifically of G.C. College, Professor Dilip Kumar Dey sent a memorandum on March 8th to the Chief Minister of Assam, the Education Minister of Assam, and the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam. In the memorandum, he thanked the Chief Minister for announcing the upgrade of Gurucharan College of Silchar, the oldest degree college in the Barak Valley, to the status of a state university. This will allow for the provision of quality higher education up to post-graduate level in various branches of general and professional studies, as well as for the augmentation of research work. The announcement has generated a feeling of respect and high appreciation among the academic circles of the Barak Valley towards the state government.
In the memorandum, Professor Dey mentioned that over 50 part-time teachers have been providing their services to Gurucharan College, covering academic transactions in this prestigious institution, including self-financed courses and vacant posts combined. Some of these part-time teachers have been providing academic inputs for 4 to 14 years during and beyond the college hours, in the absence of regular appointments against vacant but sanctioned/maintained posts. They have been made to conduct examinations, evaluations, co-curricular activities, and to assist other Programmes like competitions, seminars, workshops, university, and during NAAC peer team visits. These experienced teachers are assets to G.C. College, and some of them have passed SLET, NET, Ph.D., B.Ed., etc.

Professor Dey suggested that it would be justified to consider absorbing these experienced part-time teachers who have been teaching as part of the academic staff. They could be appointed against full-time teaching and administrative posts and supporting staff, like tutors, according to their qualifications and abilities, in the event of making appointments in the upgraded institution or the new state university (G.C. University), which will continue to impart education at the degree level. He also mentioned that there are other provincialised degree colleges in the city of Silchar and other places of the Barak valley that have a large number of vacant posts in different subjects. Even some of the departments in premier colleges are without any teacher now. The governing bodies of some of the colleges in this valley cannot advertise for the posts due to the lack of permission from the Higher Education Department. This problem needs the serious and pointed attention of the state government urgently.
Professor Dey appeals that, as a retired professor, he feels that it is his duty to bring these genuine problems to the attention of the government and to appeal for early solutions in the academic interest. He also sent a copy of the said memorandum to the Registrar of Assam University, the Principal of Cachar College Silchar, the Principal of Karimganj College Karimganj, the Principal of S.S. College Hailakandi, and the Principal of Women’s College Silchar, for their kind attention and necessary action.
