Cachar voter base stands at 13.81 lakh

way2barak, February 10:– In a major administrative and democratic milestone, the district administration of Cachar on Tuesday published the Final Electoral Roll for all seven Assembly Constituencies under the Cachar Election District following the Special Revision exercise directed by the Election Commission of India (ECI), marking a significant step towards strengthening the foundations of democratic governance, electoral transparency and institutional credibility.
The Final Electoral Rolls for 114-Lakhipur, 115-Udharbond, 116-Katigorah, 117-Borkhola, 118-Silchar, 119-Sonai and 120-Dholai (SC) Legislative Assembly Constituencies were formally released on February 10, 2026, with 01 January, 2026 as the qualifying date, in connection with the Special Revision under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The Final Photo Electoral Rolls, as published on the day, are now available for public inspection at the Office of the District Election Officer, Cachar, and with the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) of the concerned Assembly Constituencies, enabling citizens to access and verify their electoral details with ease.
A press meet in this connection was held at the Old Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Silchar, on Tuesday under the chairmanship of District Commissioner Shri Aayush Garg, IAS, in the presence of District Development Commissioner Shri Rajib Roy, ACS, Election Officer Shri Masi Topno, ACS, and Assistant Commissioner and In-Charge, District Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DDIPR), Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, Smt Deepa Das, ACS, along with senior officials of the district administration, election machinery and media representatives.
Addressing the media, District Commissioner Shri Aayush Garg, IAS, described the publication of the Final Electoral Roll as a landmark step in safeguarding the integrity of democracy and reinforcing public confidence in the electoral system. He stated that the Special Revision process was conducted with a strong institutional focus on transparency, inclusion, accountability and accuracy, supported by extensive field-level verification, door-to-door outreach by Booth Level Officers, digital and physical scrutiny of records, and structured monitoring at every administrative level. He emphasised that the objective of the exercise was not limited to administrative updation, but was aimed at strengthening democratic trust by ensuring that every eligible citizen of Cachar is rightfully represented in the voters’ list without exclusion, duplication or error.
The District Commissioner further stated that the electoral roll is not merely a statutory document but the very foundation of democratic participation, and that the credibility of elections depends on the credibility of the electoral roll. He underlined that the district administration worked in close coordination with the Election Commission of India to maintain the highest standards of transparency, neutrality and procedural integrity throughout the revision process. He also appealed to citizens to actively inspect the Final Electoral Roll, verify their personal details and electoral entries, and participate responsibly in the democratic process, stating that democracy derives its real strength from informed, aware and engaged citizens.
He further informed that an appeal shall lie from any decision of the Electoral Registration Officer of the seven Assembly Constituencies of Cachar to the District Magistrate, Cachar, under Section 24(a) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and that a second appeal under Section 24(b) against the decision of the first appellate authority shall lie before the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, in the manner prescribed under Rule 27 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, thereby ensuring a structured, lawful and transparent grievance redressal mechanism for all citizens.
As per the Final Electoral Roll published on 10 February, 2026, Cachar district now has a total of 13,81,903 electors, comprising 6,91,607 male voters, 6,90,283 female voters and 13 third-gender voters, distributed across 1,732 polling stations, reflecting a balanced demographic composition and near-equal gender representation across the district. Among the constituencies, 116-Katigorah recorded the highest number of electors with 2,13,230 voters, followed by 118-Silchar with 2,11,538 voters, while 114-Lakhipur accounts for 1,77,209 electors, indicating a wide and diverse voter base across both urban and rural segments of Cachar district.
In comparison, the Draft Electoral Roll published on 27 December, 2025, had a total of 14,15,439 electors across the district. Officials stated that the difference in figures between the draft and final rolls reflects the outcome of rigorous verification, deletion of duplicate and ineligible entries, correction of records, rationalisation of data and field-level scrutiny carried out during the Special Revision process to ensure the authenticity, credibility and legal accuracy of the Final Electoral Roll.
Earlier, Election Officer, Cachar, Shri Masi Topno, ACS, formally read out the detailed statistical data of the Final Electoral Roll and comprehensively explained the purpose of the meeting, highlighting the scope, objectives and administrative significance of the Special Revision exercise, while outlining the systematic process of verification, correction, inclusion and rationalisation undertaken to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the voters’ list.
