Cabinet will soon approve the new Silchar Airport at Dolu Tea Estate: CM Assam

Jan. 21: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state government has decided to make a new Airport at Dolu Tea Estate. He further informed that the Assam Cabinet will approve this within the next two to three weeks. CM Dr Sarma is on a one-day tour of Barak Valley. While replying to a query of a journalist during the inauguration of Cath Lab at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), the Chief Minister informed that the new Civil Airport at Silchar with state-of-the-art facilities will come up at Dolu Tea Estate.

On the issue of protest launched by ACKHSA and tea tribe associations about building an airport by destroying an ongoing tea garden, the Chief Minister said, “People of Silchar needs an Airport. So if we want to build an Airport, we will have to take any piece of land. However, we will see to it that while acquiring the land, the tea workers should not face any loss. We will definitely take into consideration the issue of life and livelihood while we finalise the land required for the construction of the airport.”

Earlier, on 28 December, 2021, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy informed that, very soon a new international airport will come up in Silchar. Around 870 acre of land has been earmarked for the purpose. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will make an official announcement in this connection soon.

Dr Roy further stated that, “Central government is fully prepared for the construction of a new airport at Silchar. The moment the state government sends a letter as regards the land for its construction to the centre, the project will see the light of the day. This is in the final stage. I am hopeful that Silchar will soon have a new international airport from where flights will go to foreign countries and we will have a direct contact with different countries of the world.”
