CAB: Assam Police launches helpline to check hate or fake messages

December 8: At a time when the government is all prepared to table the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha on Monday, protest by various organisations, students group and political parties is going on in the state. To tackle the occurrence of any untoward incident in the state, Assam Police has come up with a public notification.

Taking to tweeter, Assam Police asked citizens to report about hate or fake messages related to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill through social media handles (Facebook/Twitter) and WhatsApp helpline number. The helpline number launched by Assam Police in this connection is 9132699735.

Assam Police tweeted, “Some mischievous elements are attempting to spread hate and fake messages regarding the proposed Bill. We request all stakeholders of society not to believe in the disinformation being spread by such elements. Together, we must ensure that peace & harmony in the State is not disturbed.”

The citizenship amendment bill aims to provide citizenship to those who were forced to seek shelter in India without valid travel documents because of religious persecution or fear of persecution in their home countries—primarily Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The bill thus amends the 1955 Act to grant exemptions to illegal migrants from these communities, who reached India on or before December 2014.
