BJP proposes to rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar

December 4: Change in name of places has become a recent trend. Well, the country seems to be passing through a spell of renaming. Had he been alive, Shakespeare would have never pronounced “what’s in a name?’ We are passing through a phase wherein places named after any Mughal or European are being reversed by the present political dispensation.

Yogi Adityanath floated the proposal to change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar. BJP welcomed the move and said that the party would pursue the matter if it comes to power in poll-bound Telangana. On Sunday, while speaking at a rally in Goshamahal constituency in the city along with incumbent party MLA Raja Singh, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had said that the BJP would rename Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar. “If you are keen to rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar, then vote for BJP,” Adityanath had said on Sunday.

GVL Narasimha Rao, national spokesperson of BJP and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from UP said “Most people in Hyderabad know the city as Bhagyanagar as its earlier avatar. This is a great suggestion. BJP will pursue (the matter) further… It is about how people are wanting to relate to their historical greatness. Nizam rule had ruined the future of the people of this country. Renaming it as Bhagyanagar is a welcome move and most people in Hyderabad would love it.”

Recently, we saw several such attempts of renaming place names in the state of Uttar Pradesh. MughalSarai Junction has been renamed as Pt. Deen dayal Upadhay Junction. Three weeks after the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that Faizabad district will now be known as Ayodhya. He also announced a medical college that would be named after Lord Ram’s father in the epic Ramayana, Raja Dashrath. An airport in Ayodhya will be named after Lord Ram. On Tuesday, Ekana Stadium at Lucknow was renamed as “Bharat Ratan Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium” by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.
