Govt allows low-cost steroid drug dexamethasone to treat corona patients

June 28: As many as 19,906 new cases of coronavirus were reported from across India in the last 24 hours. It is the biggest single-day jump in the number of coronavirus cases till now in the country. As per the data released by the health ministry, a total of 5,28,859 persons were infected with the virus. he country also witnessed 410 COVID-19 related deaths during the period, taking the total number of casualties to 16,095. This is the first time that more than 19,000 fresh infections have been reported in a single day. This is the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 15,000.

The number of people discharged from hospitals continued to be higher than the active cases of Covid-19. There were 309,712 patients who have been cured of the disease and 203,051 people are infected. The recovery rate has climbed to 58.56%. India is the fourth worst-hit country in the world by the pandemic after the United States, Brazil and Russia.

The health ministry has said eight states (Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Telangana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal) account for 85.5% of the active Covid-19 caseload and 87% of the deaths due to the disease in India. The government on Saturday allowed the use of the low-cost steroid drug dexamethasone as an alternative to methylprednisolone to treat coronavirus patients with moderate and severe symptoms.
