KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS CELEBRATED IN ASSAM UNIVERSITY

way2barak, July 26 : Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated in Assam University, Silchar on 26th July 2024 in collaboration with Border Security Force (BSF) to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives while defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation during the Kargil war during May to July 1999. Every year Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26th July in honour of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Assam University presided over the programme held in Bipin Chandra Pal Milanayatan of the University where he emphasized the need for celebrating such events that instil and reinforce the values of patriotism among the students and employees of the University as well as society. He applauded the contribution of BSF and other security forces not only in direct combat with the enemy but also the intelligence resources to detect the presence of intruders as well as ascertain and keep surveillance over the likely routes of infiltration across the bordering areas of the country. In the programme coordinated by the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of the University, the Programme Coordinator Prof. M. Gangabhushan welcomed all the guests and attendees from within and outside the university. He said that this day symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair and knowledge over ignorance. He expressed happiness over the enthusiastic participation of students and youths in the event.

Chief Guest of the programme Dr. Chyawan Prakash Meena, Deputy Inspector General of BSF Mizoram & Cachar Frontier Masimpur while remembering the sacrifices of solders in the Kargil war advised the students to become good human beings, persons with integrity to the nation and be the changes in the society. He said that every individual is a patriot as long as he or she keeps up motivation to express the good qualities bestowed upon and keeps inspiring others to do good for the society in particular and thus for the country at large. Guest of Honour Shri Sanjay Kumar who commands the BSF 16 Battalion headquartered in Patharkandi in Karimganj district pointed out that like the soldiers who provide safety and security by defending the borders others from various walks of life also contribute to providing food security, economic security, environmental safety, health security etc. and many of these values are nurtured among the students, youths and teachers at such higher education institutes like Assam University. In his address the second-in-command of BSF 170 Battalion in Dholchera, Cachar, Shri Suman Sahoo opined that the Kargil martyrs did not sacrifice their lives for the nation rather they lived for the nation and were honoured by the highest of military decorations like Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra etc. which are in fact the dreams of every soldier. Customary vote of thanks was offered by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Bishwajit Das, Assistant Professor at the Department of Law. NSS Programme Officer and Associate Professor of the Department of Life Science & Bioinformatics Dr. Shubhadeep Roychoudhury anchored the programme.
During the programme a documentary on the Kargil war was also shown and a silence of 1 minute was observed by all in the memory of the Kargil heroes. As a part of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, Assam University’s Own War Museum Installed and inaugurated two war trophies in the form of INS Vikrant R11 ship protype and ALH DHRUV IN704 helicopter prototype received from Indian Naval Head Quarter New Delhi. The War Trophies were inaugurated by Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant in Presence of Dr. Chyawan Prakash Meena, Deputy Inspector General of BSF Mizoram & Cachar Frontier Masimpur, Shri Sanjay Kumar , Commandant, BSF 16 Battalion headquartered in Patharkandi in Karimganj district, the second-in-command of BSF 170 Battalion in Dholchera, Cachar, Shri Suman Sahoo, Rajesh Kumar Singh , Deputy Commandant of BSF 16 Battalion , officers from the university administration, students, teachers and non-teaching employees of the University, research scholars, students’ union, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets. There was a gathering of more than 300 students representing the nearby educational institutions who were delighted to see the glimpses of valour of our country’s Armed Forces in the war museum premises. The program was organised by Assam University War Museum Committee, specifically Chairman Dr Deepjyoti Choudhury, Convenor Mr Arijit Goswami, Member Mr Debanon Dey Purkayastha and others members who also thanked Indian Navy Headquarters for providing Assam University the war trophies.
