- 5 April, 1815: Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies, has its first violent eruption after several centuries of dormancy.
- 5 April, 1818: Jagjivan Ram, also known as “Babuji” in political circles was born on this day. He was an Independence activist and politician who was born in Arrah, Bihar in 1908. He was the youngest minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s first cabinet and was given the portfolio of Labour Minister. He served as a Minister for 40 years with subsequent Indian National Congress (INC) governments, the most important being the Defense minister portfolio during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
- 5 April, 1919: National Maritime Day celebrated for the first time to commemorate the first journey of the First Indian Flag Merchant Vessel S.S. Loyalty which sailed from Mumbai to London on this day.
- 5 April, 1922: Ramabai was born on 23rd April, 1858 in Madras, British India. She was a social reformer and worked for uplifting the status of women in Indian society. She was honored with titles of “Pandita” and “Saraswati” in Calcutta, Bengal in recognition of her skills in Sanskrit. Pandita Ramabai died from septic bronchitis on 5 April 1922 just before her 64th birthday.
- 5 April, 1955: Anthony Eden succeeds Winston Churchill as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
- 5 April, 2000: Indian Rabindra Sangeet singer Kanika Banerjee died on this day. Born on October 12, 1924 at Sonamukhi in Bankura district, Kanika joined Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan in West Bengal, India. She was trained in both classical and Rabindra sangeet in Sangeet Bhavana (School of Music) at Santiniketan. Shantiniketan.
- 5 April, 2007: Bengali writer Leela Majumdar died on this day. Born to Surama Devi and Pramada Ranjan Ray (who was the younger brother of Upendra Kishor Ray Choudhuri), Leela spent her childhood days at Shillong, where she studied at the Loreto Convent. Surama Devi had been adopted by Upendra Kishor Ray Choudhuri.
