Assam govt seeks report of 3.8 lakhs people who haven’t filed claims for inclusion in NRC

May 7: The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on 30 July in Assam, identifying 2,89,83,677 people as valid citizens of India. A total 3,29,91,384 people had applied to become part of the NRC. More than 40 lakh people were found to be invalid citizens of India. Out of 40, 07,707 individuals, who were excluded from the final draft, published in July 30, 2018, 36.2 lakhs have filed claims for inclusion of their names in the final list.

The Assam government has sought details of around 380,000 people, who it says did not file claims and objections even after their names were found missing in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), a document aimed at identifying illegal immigrants.

Ashutosh Agnihotri, commissioner and secretary, Home and Political Department said, “We need the information on those who did not file claims in order to prepare for filing references to the Foreigners’ Tribunals. a letter was sent to the office of the state coordinator of the NRC (SCNRC) through the Border Organisation of the Assam Police seeking these details.”

Agnihotri further stated that when the final draft of NRC will published in July 31 this year (as per the deadline set by the Supreme Court), the individuals whose names get dropped off the list will get a chance to file complaint against their exclusion to the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs). “If there are still individuals who do not approach the FTs on their own, the state will do so on their behalf,” Agnihotri said.
