Assam CM inaugurates Hailakandi PS online, 3 PS under Cachar and 1 under Karimganj districts under MOITRI

Jan.10: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday inaugurated virtually the newly constructed Hailakandi Sadar Police Station at a function held at Dholai Police Station premises in Cachar district. Sonowal also inaugurated the Dholai Police Station and virtually inaugurated besides Hailakandi Police Station, Badarpur Police Station under Karimganj district. Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Udharbond Police Station and Joypur Police Station online under Cachar district at a function organised at Udharbond Police Station campus.
These buildings have been built under the Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (MOITRI).

Sonowal exuded optimism that the newly built structures with their state-of-the-art infrastructure would be able to provide people-friendly dedicated services. Urging the police personnel to be more responsive towards the public, Sonowal said, *Creating infrastructure only would not suffice to improve the overall quality of policing in the state. The police personnel must be more responsible and responsive to the needs of the public.”

Elaborating on the objective behind MOITRI, Sonowal said that the government aims to strengthen the bond of amity and unity amongst the people of Assam by building bridges of understanding between the police and the public. He added that the scheme would alter the image of police stations among the public and instill confidence among them to come forward to seek police help during their times of need while also providing police personnel a better working environment.

Chief Minister Sonowal said that the Assam Police has been playing pivotal role in instilling sense of security among the people. He also said that under the present situation the police force has to play even greater role in view of the changing dynamics of crime. He also hailed the state police force for standing by the people during times of exigency as well as during general needs.

Chief Minister Sonowal also lauded the role of police during COVID-19 pandemic situation. He said that the police personnel played the role of true friends of the people during the lockdown period even going to the extent of providing ration and medicine to the distressed people.

Under the MOITRI scheme, the state government has taken up initiatives to reconstruct the buildings of the police stations and develop infrastructure with improved public amenities. The government under the MOITRI scheme has adopted a visionary and ambitious programme of reconstructing 346 police stations of the state with a financial outlay of Rs 2 crore for every police station to be reconstructed and refurbished within a period of five years. In the first phase, 73 police stations have been earmarked for renovation.

Meanwhile, to mark the virtual inauguration of the Hailakandi Sadar Police Station by the Chief Minister beamed live, a function was held at the Sadar Police Station campus where Deputy Commissioner, Megh Nidhi Dahal, SP, Pabindra Kumar Nath, CEO, Zilla Parishad, Joydeep Shukla and President, Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, Farhana Khanam Choudhury and BJP District President, Swapon Bhattacharjee were present.

Deputy Commissioner, Dahal lighted the lamp and cut the red ribbon to mark the inauguration of the newly constructed three-storied police station with provisions for reception, conference hall with cyber room and work station, women cell and counselling room for drug addicts and juvenile with boundary wall and approach road. The project cost is estimated at Rs.1.65 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, DC, Dahal said that the police personnel work under trying situation and that they work day in and day out. He said the state-of-the-art infrastructure would help to improve work culture and also ensure people-friendly services. He also thanked contractor Nirmalendu Ghosh for constructing the building in a beautiful way. SP, Nath expressed the hope that the infrastructure of the police station being modernised would further strengthen the police-public relations.
