প্রথমে অনুমতি দিয়েও পরে প্রত্যাহার, ছবিমেলায় অরুন্ধতী রায়ের বক্তৃতা বাতিল
Arundhati Roy’s talk shifted to different venue at Dhaka Chobi Mela after police revoke permission

৫ মার্চ : বাংলাদেশে অরুন্ধতী রায়ের অনুষ্ঠানে অনুমতি দিল না ঢাকা মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশ। মঙ্গলবার কৃষিবিদ ইনস্টিটিউট অডিটোরিয়ামে এই ভারতীয় লেখকের বক্তৃতার আয়োজন করেছিল ‘ছবি মেলা’। চলতি বছরের ১৬ ফেব্রুয়ারির এই আবেদনে প্রথমে অনুমতি দিলেও সোমবার মাঝরাতে তা প্রত্যাহার করে নেয় পুলিশ। ফেসবুকে পোস্টে এই দাবি করেছেন বাংলাদেশের চিত্রসাংবাদিক শাহিদুল আলম।

 

এ প্রসঙ্গে ফেসবুক পোস্টে শাহিদুল জানান, ‘অনুষ্ঠান ঘিরে সবরকম প্রস্তুতি সম্পূর্ণ হয়ে গিয়েছিল। এই সিদ্ধান্তে আমরা স্তম্ভিত…আমরা হতাশ।’ শাহিদুল এও জানিয়েছেন, যাঁরা এই অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছিলেন, তাঁদের জন্য এমন সিদ্ধান্ত অত্যন্ত দুঃখের। পাশাপাশি যাঁরা অরুন্ধতীর বক্তৃতা শোনার জন্য মুখিয়ে ছিলেন, তাঁদের জন্যও দুঃখপ্রকাশ করেছেন শাহিদুল।

প্রসঙ্গত, পুলিশি অনুমতি না মেলায় ঢাকার ছবি মেলায় অরুন্ধতী রায়ের বক্তৃতা বাতিল করা হয়েছে। ওই অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেওয়ার কথা ছিল শাহিদুলেরও। উল্লেখ্য, গত বছর শাহিদুল আলমকে কারাবন্দি করেছিল সে দেশের হাসিনা সরকার। অনুমতি দিয়েও পরে তা প্রত্যাহার করার ব্যাপারে ঢাকা মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশের তরফে জানানো হয়েছে, ‘অনিবার্য কারণবশত’ অরুন্ধতী রায়ের বক্তৃতার অনুমতি প্রত্যাহার করা হয়েছে। উল্লেখ্য, ছবি মেলা হল এশিয়ায় সর্ববৃহৎ আলোকচিত্র উৎসব। সেখানেই লেখিকা অরুন্ধতী রায়ের বক্তৃতার আয়োজন করা হয়েছিল। এটিই ছিল লেখিকা অরুন্ধতী রায়ের প্রথম বাংলাদেশ সফর।

March 5: A much-anticipated talk by the Booker Prize-winning author Arundhati Roy at  the tenth edition of the prestigious Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography, has been called off at the last moment. The organisers of the event expressed their apologies for the cancellation of the event on their Facebook post.

Hours after the Dhaka Police withdrew their permission for a talk by writer and activist Arundhati Roy in the city, the organisers of the event announced on Tuesday that the event has been moved to a new venue. In another update posted around 12:32pm, the organizers said the event would be held on the 12th floor of Midas Centre at 6pm, and Arundhati Roy will speak at the discussion with the literature lovers.

Roy had already arrived at the festival on 4 March and visited the photography exhibition. Chobi Mela is often touted to be Asia’s largest photography festival. Conceptualised in the year 2000, it is held biennially under the aegis of the Drik Picture Library and Pathshala (The South Asian Institute of Photography).

At the beginning of the discussion, hosted by Shahidul Alam, Roy exchanged greetings with the audience. Moving on with the conversation, the novelist read passages from her first fiction “The God of Small Things” and her first political essay “The End of Imagination.” She also shared how she walked away from fame after winning the Man Booker Prize and became involved in political protests instead.

Meanwhile, a number of civil society members issued a statement later on Tuesday evening, condemning the “cowardly and unjustifiable withdrawal of permission” that was earlier granted to organize the event with author and social justice activist Arundhati Roy at Krishibid Institution. The signatories said they “believe that this undemocratic and arbitrary decision of withdrawal is a clear example of the shrinking space for freedom of speech, a key constitutional commitment and core value of the spirit of Liberation War of Bangladesh.”
