Chocked drains, footpath encroached; DC orders immediate action

March 4: A few spells of shower and most part of Silchar witnesses mini flood. The primary reason for this phenomenon is the poor drainage system of Silchar town. To find a pragmatic and plausible solution of the drainage system and for overcoming the occurrence of water logging in the rainy season, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Barnali Sarma along with District Development Commissioner cum Executive officer Silchar Municipal Board, Jessica Lalsim, CEO (District Disaster Management) Rajib Roy and officials of DDMA did a survey of Silchar Municipality areas on Tuesday.

During the inspection, DC Cachar noticed that road side drains of Silchar town area are fully blocked due to dumping of wastes from the houses, shops, restaurants and hotels thereby clogging the natural system of water flow. She expressed her deep concern noticing the pathetic condition of drainage system of the town. During her visit, she also noticed that most of the pavements in commercial areas of Silchar town are illegally encroached by the shop owners.

Meanwhile, during her interaction with the local people, complaints were also made to the Deputy Commissioner as regards dumping of garbage on the roads during resulting in an unhealthy environment. It is in this backdrop that the Deputy Commissioner gave strict instructions to the concerned department to take immediate action to clear the footpaths and the drains within seven days. DC Sharma also made an appeal to all sections of the society to maintain cleanliness in Silchar town and help in making our town  “Swachh Sundor Silchar”.
