After much ordeal, brother-sister duo from Silchar starts journey for home from Chennai
May 13: After much ordeal, the brother- sister duo boarded the train from Chennai for Guwahati on Wednesday night. Doyel Naug & her younger cousin brother Subrata got stranded in Vellore since the month of March. Doyel’s mother Kalpana Naug was a cancer patient and so they went for treatment in Vellore but unfortunately got stranded due to the nationwide lockdown. In the meantime, Doyel’s mother expired. Doyel and her cousin brother Subrata performed the last rites of Kalpana Naug amidst the lockdown in Vellore.
The loss of her mother was an incident of immense sorrow in the life of Doyel and that too in an unknown place far away from her hometown Silchar. But the days following her mother’s death was much more tragic for her and her brother. They were stuck in a lodge. There was no means to come back to Silchar. She tried in vain to call the helpline number announced by Assam government to bring back its stranded residents. Finally, Doyel took to social media and wrote an open letter to Deputy Commissioner, Cachar on 11 May, 2020.
The power of social media is so immense, that her post was shared 317 times and it finally reached the right hands. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar also took serious note of the matter. In the meantime, Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy acted really fast and immediately took up the matter with the Resident Commissioner of Assam House in Chennai. Doyel and her brother were shifted to Assam House in Vellore the very next day she wrote for help in social media. MP Silchar also spoke to Doyel and assured her of a safe return to Silchar. He got in touch with OSD Mr. Anand at Chennai and asked him to manage two tickets for them by the next available special train.
