A life-sized statue of Dr. Rajendra Prasad unveiled in Raj Bhavan

Dec. 3: As a mark of respect to Dr. Rajendra Prasad on his 137th birth anniversary, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today unveiled a life-sized statue of the first President of India at Raj Bhavan here today. The statue sculpted by eminent sculptor Biren Sinha has been installed right in front of Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan.

Speaking on the occasion Governor Prof. Mukhi while paying his rich tributes to the first President, said that as a freedom fighter who gave India freedom Dr. Rajendra Prasad played an important role in ensuring justice and leading the nation to growth and prosperity. He also said that Dr. Rajendra Prasad personified humility and lived by the principles of ‘Simple living and high thinking’.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma while terming Dr. Rajendra Prasad as one of the tallest leaders of Indian Union, said that not only in freedom struggle, the Bharat Ratna as the Chairman of Constituent Assembly played a key role in shaping the constitution for the Republic. Marshalling the people of India against the foreign rule, Dr. Prasad provided able support to Mahatma Gandhi to mobilise the public against the British rule.

Paying his rich tributes, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that Dr. Rajendra Prasad as an erudite law scholar played great role in creating parliamentary norms and etiquettes. After becoming the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad helped in transforming the Rashtrapati Bhavan into an institution eulogizing the values of people’s democracy as against the colonial impressions.

He also said, “I am happy to be part of the unveiling ceremony of a statue of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of our Republic at Raj Bhavan today. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of this towering personality, unveiling his statue at the constitutional epithet of our State is a fitting tribute to the unparalleled contributions of our first President”. He also said that as a staunch nationalist and people’s President, Dr Rajendra Prasad played crucial role to give India its well-deserved freedom. He said that installing the statue at Raj Bhavan is a noble initiative, through which posterity can learn about the real hero. He also said that Dr. Prasad was an erudite scholar, whose knowledge on law and democracy lead India to gain a comprehensive Constitution of all time.

Deputy Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly Dr. Numal Momin, Handloom and Textile etc. Minister U.G. Brahma, Education Minister Ranuj Pegu, Revenue Minister Jogen Mohan, BTC Chief Promod Boro, granddaughter of Bharat Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad Tara Sinha, great granddaughter Mona Sinha and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
