Barak Valley registers 346 Covid +ve cases on Friday; 5 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 1,600 in Barak Valley

May 7: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Friday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less. A total of 346 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Thursday, Barak Valley registered 372 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Friday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 198 positive cases   (It was 230 on Wednesday)
  • Karimganj: 104 positive cases (It was 74 on  Wednesday)
  • Hailakandi: 44 positive cases (It was 68 on Wednesday)

A total of 198 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Friday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 2,053 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done, out of which, a total of 142 persons were found positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas 56 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Dr. Ibrahim Ali Ahmed, District Surveillance Officer (DSO), IDSP, Cachar on Friday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 2,371 in 2021, whereas during the year, 1,407 patients were discharged. There are 961 active cases at present in Cachar.

In last 24 hours, 5 more Covid-19 infected patients died at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), out of which, 4 are from Cachar district and 01 from Karimganj. This is the highest single day spike in death of Covid patients in the district this year. This was stated by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH on Friday evening. The 05 deceased were identified as:

  • Sekhar Chandra Das (71) from Banamali Road in Karimganj was admitted at SMCH. He was admitted on 1 May and breathed his last at 8 PM on 6 May, 2021.
  • Mridul Kanti Roy (50) from Second Link Road in Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 3 May. He lost his life at 9 PM on 6 May.
  • Suk Sagar Dutta (69) from Itkhola, Silchar took admission on 6 May. He died at 7 AM on 7 May, 2021.
  • Debi Kanungo (70) also from Cachar district was admitted at SMCH on 6 May. She breathed last at 1.35 PM on 7 May, 2021.
  •  Prabash Chakraborty (82) from Ganganagar in Cachar district was admitted at SMCH on 3 May. He, however, died at 5.50 PM on & May, 2021.

Hailakandi registered 44 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. Of the 44 active cases, 43 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 01 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 266 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,148 RAT tests and 30 RT-PCR tests were done. 21 persons were discharged on Friday.

Karimganj registered highest ever spike in a single day with detection of 104 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 4,957. Of the 104 active cases detected on Friday, 93 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and 11 under RT-PCR.

The district has altogether 373 active COVID-19 cases while 34 patients have recuperated from the disease on Friday. 1,755 swab samples were collected on Friday. Altogether 2,37,245 samples have been tested so far. The district has 39 active containment zones.

On Friday, out of 68,318 tests, 5,626 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. This is the highest single day spike in the number of Covid cases in Assam in 2021. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 2,83,313. The positivity rate in the state is 8.24 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,551 positive cases during the day. Further, on Friday, 47 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 1,578. On Friday, 3,262 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,46,242 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged.

Further, during the day, 47 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 47 deceased, 15 are from Kamrup Metro; 8 from Dibrugarh; 3 each from Cachar & Golaghat; 2 each from Nalabari, Sibsagar, Sonitpur & Udalguri; 1 each from Baksha, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup Rural and Karimganj. The death tally of the state now stands at 1,578.
