1 student of SS College & another from AK Chanda Law College tests +ve amid ongoing TDC & LL.B exam

April 23: In the wake of the rising number of coronavirus cases, students appearing in the ongoing TDC (CBCS) and LL.B examinations are gradually getting infected by the infectious disease. On Thursday, a TDC student of SS College, Hailakandi was detected positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). The student has been referred to home isolation by the health department. The incident has given rise to panic both among the students and the staff of the college.

Meanwhile, on 23 April, a student of AK Chanda Law College, Silchar also tested positive for Covid-19 amid her ongoing LL.B examination. As per reports, a family member of that female already was detected positive a few days ago. She is presently at home isolation. In both the cases, these students will not be able able to sit for their remaining examinations as per Covid protocol.

These are not isolated cases. Earlier, students of GC College, NC Paul Memorial College, Karimganj College also tested positive. Prior to that, an Assistant Officer In-charge of TDC Examination of Cachar College was detected as Covid positive.

It needs mention here that the Cachar & Karimganj Hailakandi Zone members of Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA) wrote a letter to the Vice chancellor of Assam University, wherein they have raised great concern for the students and staff of the colleges as more and more students are gradually become corona positive. In their letter, they sought the immediate intervention of the Vice Chancellor. Further, the Cachar district administration has also issued a letter to the college Principals, wherein they have directly stated that “Conduct of offline examinations may worsen the situation.” The Additional Deputy Commissioner asked the Principals to take up this matter with their higher authority.

Meanwhile, Principals of GC College, Cachar College, Radhamadhab College and some other colleges referring to the letter issued by Cachar District Administration, wrote to the Controller of Examination of Assam University and informed him the concern raised by the district administration. It is in this connection that Assam University has convened a special meeting of Standing Committee of the Academic Council on 26 April. As per sources, the Standing Committee meeting will take stock of the ongoing offline examinations of affiliated colleges.

The Covid situation in Cachar district is also worsening. On 22 April, 49 new cases of COVID-19 was reported in Cachar. During the day, a total of 1,928 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done, out of which, a total of 35 persons were found positive, whereas 14 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. With this, the district tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 11,933. Further, a total of 11,604 patients were discharged in the district as of now.  At present, 22 patients are admitted at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), 11 at Green Heals Pvt Hospital, 08 at MH, 08 at SM Dev Civil Hospital, whereas, 242 others are in home isolation. There are 291 active cases in Cachar district. Two patients are in critical condition at SMCH.
