NRC exercise will happen in entire nation, afresh exercise will be conducted in Assam too: Amit Shah

November 20: An estimated amount of Rs 1500 crore have been spent so far on the mammoth exercise of updating the National register of Citizens (NRC) that continued for last six years and witnessed the involvement of over 50,000 officials of the state government. However, the declaration made by the Union government and later on welcomed by Assam government indicates another rigorous process of updating the NRC, which will be a part of a nationwide exercise.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah while speaking in the Rajya Sabha said that there will be a pan India National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Assam will naturally be a part of it. Shah said, “The NRC exercise in Assam was conducted according to an act and also as per the direction of Supreme Court of India. The NRC exercise will happen in entire nation and then afresh exercise will be conducted in Assam too.”

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday welcomed the statement made by union home minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha. He held the view that Assam state BJP and government are of the opinion that the NRC prepared under the supervision of Supreme Court by State Coordinator Prateek Hajela has failed to fulfill the aspirations the people of Assam. He said, “There were various lacunae that we have already pointed out. Various social organisations of Assam have filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking review of the present process. We are of the view the present NRC should be scrapped & we should be part of national NRC process.”

While speaking about the modalities, Amit Shah said, “The process of National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be carried out across the country. No one, irrespective of religion should be worried. It is just a process to get everyone under the NRC.”

The final NRC list of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on 31 August, 2019. Out of a total number of 3,30,27,661 applicants, the names of 3,11,21,004 were included in the final NRC. That means a total of 19,06,657 persons were excluded from the NRC.
