Relatives of truck accident victim accuses SMCH to discharge the injured on ground of shortage of seat

November 4: A speeding truck ran over several people in a Kali Puja immersion procession in Meherpur area of Silchar on 30 October. Two young girls were crushed to death and 19 others were injured who were admitted at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). On that very night, Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque and Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy went to SMCH and assured free treatment of all the injured.

However, within the next 3 days, SMCH started to release the injured. The kith and kin even alleged that inspite of the assurance of free treatment from the public representatives, they had to purchase medicines. This allegation was, however, later on refuted by MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy. A relative of an injured also said that citing reasons of shortage of beds, the doctors started releasing the injured before they were cured.

On Monday, MLA North Karimganj Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha led a Congress delegation along with Sanjeev Roy, Subrata Deb and Bappi Routh to SMCH. Just when they were about to enter the SMCH building, they met with one of the accident victims who was severely injured. She was lying in an ambulance. On being asked, the patient’s relative informed the MLA that the injured Shova Basfor was released. According to the relative, “She is still suffering, but the doctors released her today. When we insisted that she needs further treatment, we were told that there is scarcity of bed at SMCH. Saying so, they almost forcibly released our patient.”

The 17 year old girl Shova Basfor is the daughter of Gopal Basfor, a resident of Meherpur Durgapally. She is a student of Higher Secondary First Year and studies at Silchar G.C. College. Speaking to media, her parents said, “We don’t know how long it will take our girl to get cured and return back to normal life. Had she been kept at SMCH for some more days, she could have received further treatment and got cured much early.”
