Municipal Chairperson charged for irregularities in leasing out municipal lands, explanation called

November 3: A long list of charges were framed against a Municipal Board Chairperson in Assam, which includes irregularities in leasing out municipal lands, conduction of tendering process for allotment of market, parking, hoardings etc without taking board’s resolution, improper maintenance of main cash book and log books for office vehicles, improper maintenance of the records of the urban local body’s assets and financial irregularities.

The concerned Chairperson is Soma Chakraborty of Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB). Mrs. Chakraborty is the Chairperson of the BJP-controlled Dibrugarh Municipal Board since 24 April, 2017. HD Sarma, Secretary of Urban Development Department,  Government of Assam has summoned the DMB Chairperson Soma Chakraborty to appear before him on 4 November over several charges of illegal activities. The Secretary to the Government of Assam, Urban Development Department has also sought an explanation as to why Section 298 of the Assam Municipal Act, 1956, should not be invoked.

The DMB Chairperson Soma Chakraborty has refuted all the allegations levelled against her. She said that she will definitely appear before the Secretary on Monday to respond to the allegations. As per sources, she has been facing rebellion from the ward commissioners of her own party since she became the Chairperson of DMB.
