২০০৯ সাল থেকেই আমি অটলবিহারী বাজপেয়ীর অভাববোধ করতে থাকি। সে বার আমি লোকসভায় নির্বাচিত হলেও ছিলেন না তিনি। এর আগে ১৯৯১ ও ১৯৯৮ সালে জিতেছিলাম। তিনিই তখন একজন প্রকৃত অভিভাবকের মতো পুরো সংসদীয় দলকে নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছেন।

বাজপেয়ীজির সঙ্গে আমার পরিচয় ১৯৫০-র দশকে। শিলচরে এসেছিলেন। আমি তখন আরএসএস করতাম। তিনি জনসঙ্ঘের নেতা। তবু আমরাই তাঁর সফরের যাবতীয় ব্যবস্থা করি।

জরুরি অবস্থার সময় অটলজি, আডবাণীজি সহ জনসঙ্ঘের সব নেতাকে গ্রেফতার করে জেলে পোরা হয়। আরএসএস এর প্রতিবাদে সরব হয়। তখন তাঁদেরও ধরপাকড় চলে। আমার দুই ভাইকেও গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছিল।

জরুরি অবস্থার পরেই লোকসভার নির্বাচন ঘোষণা হল। ১৯৭৮ সালের ১ জানুয়ারি সঙ্ঘের নির্দেশে চাকরি থেকে ইস্তফা দিই। পরিবারের সবাই বলছিলেন, সরকারি স্কুলের অধ্যক্ষের চাকরি ছেড়ে দেবে! সংসার চলবে কী করে। সে সব ভাবনা দূরে সরিয়ে জনতা পার্টির প্রার্থী হিসেবে দাঁড়িয়ে পড়ে। জিততে পারিনি বটে। কিন্তু বিজেপির জন্মলগ্ন থেকে জড়িয়ে থাকার এটা একটা যোগসূত্র। ওই সূত্রেই বাজপেয়ীজির স্নেহ-ভালোবাসা প্রাপ্তি।

১৯৮০ সালে শাসক জনতা পার্টিতে আরএসএস-কে নিয়ে বিভাজন দেখা দিলে ৫-৬ এপ্রিল ফিরোজশাহ কোটলা ময়দানে কনভেনশন ডাকেন অটলজি। আমিও সেই কনভেনশনে যাই। সেখানেই পৃথক দল গঠনের সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছিল। ৬ এপ্রিল ভারতীয় জনতা পার্টি-র জন্ম হয়। সে দিনই অটলজি ডেকে অসমের কাজকর্ম দেখার জন্য আমাকেই নির্দেশ দিলেন। দিল্লি থেকে গুয়াহাটি আসি। উত্তর-পূর্বের প্রধান শহর বলে কথা। কিন্তু নতুন দলে কাজ করতে কেউ রাজি হলেন না। আসি শিলচরে। ৬ মে দলের কাছাড় জেলা কমিটি গঠন করা হয়। এটিই উত্তর-পূর্বে বিজেপির প্রথম কমিটি।

কাজকর্ম চলতে থাকে। ১৯৯১ সালে অসমে লোকসভা ও বিধানসভার নির্বাচন একসঙ্গে নির্বাচন হয়। সুন্দরসিং ভাণ্ডারী ছিলেন দায়িত্বে। তিনি আমাকে বিধানসভার ভোটে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করতে পরামর্শ দেন। আমি চাইছিলাম লোকসভায় দাঁড়াতে। অটলজি এর কারণ জানতে চাইলেন। বললাম, আমি লোকসভায় দাঁড়ালে এর অধীনস্থ সব বিধানসভা আসনের প্রার্থীরা আমার সমান সংখ্যক ভোট পাবেন। মন ভরল বাজপেয়ীজির। লোকসভা ভোটেরই টিকিট দেওয়া হল আমায়। সেই বার বরাকের দুটি লোকসভা আসনেই আমরা জিতি। ১৫ বিধানসভা আসনের ৯টিতে বিজেপি জেতে। তাতে আমার প্রতি অটলজির স্নেহ-ভালবাসা বেড়ে যায়।

১৯৯৯ সালে দল কেন্দ্রে মন্ত্রিসভা গঠন করে। সুন্দরসিং ভাণ্ডারী তখন আমাকে বাজপেয়ীজির সঙ্গে দেখা করে মন্ত্রিত্বের কথা বলতে পরামর্শ দেন। আমি যাইনি। কারণ আমার বিশ্বাস ছিল, তিনি যোগ্য মনে করলে ডেকে নেবেন। ঠিকই সে দিন মন্ত্রিত্বের জন্য আমাকে বাছাই করেছিলেন। তাও এমন দফতর, ক্যাবিনেটে স্থায়ীভাবে কেউ ছিলেন না। ফলে যোগাযোগ মন্ত্রক আমাকেই চালাতে হয়। অটলজি একদিন বললেন, টেলিফোন অ্যাডভাইজরি কমিটি গঠন যে ঝুলে রয়েছে। আমি বলি, এটা ক্যাবিনেট মন্ত্রীর সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার কথা। তখন যোগাযোগ মন্ত্রক তাঁরই হাতে। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে নোট লিখে দিয়ে আমাকেই এই কাজের দায়িত্ব দিলেন।

একদিনের কথা বলি। সরকারি কাজে তাঁর বাংলোয় গিয়েছিলাম। অনেকক্ষণ কথাবার্তা হল. বেরিয়ে আসার সময় বললেন, চলুন, এক জায়গায় যাবো। গাড়িতে করে বিমানবন্দরে আসি। তখনও কিছু বললেন না। বিমানে উঠলাম। তাঁর পাশে বসে কুরুক্ষেত্রে গেলাম। সেখানে সভা ছিল। সেরে আবার ফিরে এলাম দুইজনে। পারিবারিক সম্পর্ক না গড়ে উঠলে একজন প্রধানমন্ত্রী এই সুযোগ দিতে পারেন না।

কত কথা বলব! একবার করিমগঞ্জে যুব মোর্চা মানবশৃঙ্খল গড়বে। তখন যুব মোর্চার প্রধান উমা ভারতী। তিনি অটলজিকে ওই কর্মসূচিতে অংশ নিতে অনুরোধ জানালেন। অটলজি বললেন, এ কথা তুমি কেন, প্রয়োজন হলে পুরকায়স্থজিই বলবেন। পরে উমা ভারতী আমাকে বললেন। আমি তাঁর কাছে যেতেই বলেন, উমা পাঠিয়েছি বুঝি। ঠিক আছে, আমি যাব। কত লোক হবে। বললাম, ৫০ হাজার হবে। আমায় আশ্বস্ত করে বললেন, ৩০ হাজার শ্রোতা পেলেই আমি খুশি। সেই সভায় ২ লক্ষের সমাবেশ হয়েছিল। আমার উপর তাঁর আস্থা আরও বেড়ে গিয়েছিল।

আরেকটা ঘটনা বলতেই হয়। ত্রিপুরায় গিয়েছি মন্ত্রী হিসেবে। আমার কনভয়ের একটা গাড়ি দুর্ঘটনায় পড়ে। একজন পুলিশকর্মী নিহত হন। এক অফিসারও চোট পান। শিলচর ফিরে শুনি, প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অফিস থেকে ফোন এসেছিল। দিল্লি গিয়েই তাঁর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে বলেছেন। পরদিন যেতেই দুর্ঘটনার খবর নিলেন। টেলিকম সচিবকে ডেকে পাঠালেন। জানতে চাইলেন, বিভাগীয় মন্ত্রী দুর্ঘটনায় পড়লেন, প্রধানমন্ত্রীর দফতরকে কেন অন্য সূত্রে জানতে হল?

এমন  ব্যক্তিত্বকে কি শুধু মানুষ বললেই হয়। তিনি ছিলেন মহামানব। তাঁর বিদেহী আত্মার চিরশান্তি কামনা করি।

I started feeling a sense of void from 2009 onwards, the void was the absence of Atalji in the active political arena. Though I was elected to the Lok Sabha in that year but I missed his presence. Prior to that, I won in 1991 and 1998 respectively. It was he who then gave the leadership to the entire parliamentary party.

I became acquainted with Vajpayeeji since the decade of 1950s. He came to Silchar. At that time, I was associated with RSS. He was then the leader of Jan Sangh. Inspite of that, we made all necessary arrangements for his stay over here.

During the days of emergency, all leaders of Jan Sangh including Atalji, Advaniji and others were put behind the bars. RSS raised its voice against these arrests. At that time, my two brothers were also arrested.

Lok Sabha elections were declared just after lifting up of the emergency. On 1^st January 1958, I resigned from my job on the direction of the Sangh. At that time, my family members were in deep thought. They failed to understand how I shall run my family after resigning from the lucrative post of a principal of government school. However, keeping aside all thoughts and worries, I contested the Lok Sabha elections as a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party. Though I could not win but I was fortunate enough to be associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party since its very birth. It is in this connection that I was fortunate enough to be bestowed with love and affection of Vajpayeeji.

When in the year 1980, there seemed to be a breach between ruling Janata Party and RSS, Atalji gave call for a convention on 5-6 April at Firoz Shah Kotla ground. I also attended this convention. It was in that convention that a decision was taken to form a new party. On 6^th April, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was born. On that very day, Atalji called me and asked me to take over the reins of the party in Assam. I candidly told Atalji that if I contest Lok Sabha polls, my goal will be that the MLAs contesting from BJP under my Lok Sabha constituency will get equal number of votes.I was fortunate enough to get the Lok Sabha ticket. In that year, we won the two Lok Sabha seats from Barak Valley. Again, out of the 15 Assembly seats from Barak, 9 were bagged by the candidates of BJP. This increased the trust, love and affection of Atalji towards me.

In 1999, BJP formed the government at the centre. Sundar Singh Bhandari called me and asked to meet with Vajpayeeji and claim my stake as a minister. But I did not go to meet him. It was my belief that he would himself call me if he thinks me fit for any post. And true to my belief, Atalji called me to assume charge of the ministry on that very day. I was given the portfolio of Communication ministry. One day Atalji told me that the matter of formation of Telephone Advisory Committee has yet not been finalized. I replied that the issue needs to be decided by the cabinet minister. At that period, this portfolio of cabinet minister was in the hands of Atalji. At once, he wrote a note and gave me the responsibility of forming the advisory committee.

Let me narrate the incident of a day. On that day I went to his official residence for some official work. We had a long talk and while coming out he said “Let’s go to one place.” I came along with him in his vehicle to the airport. Till that time, he didn’t told me our destination. We boarded the flight. I sat near him in the plane and went to Kurukshetra. There was a meeting at Kurukshetra. After the meeting we came back together. Had there been no relationship of the heart, a Prime Minister would never have given such an opportunity.

There are number of instances when I got the opportunity to come in close proximity with him. Once in Karimganj the Yuva Morcha had given a call for the formation of human chain. At that time, the chief of Yuva Morcha was Uma Bharti. She requested Atalji to participate in that event. Atalji at once replied, “Why are you telling this to me. If need arises, Purkaysthaji will ask me to go.”  When I went to meet him, he straight away asked, “Have you been sent by Uma to meet me?” Saying so, he gave his consent to come down at Karimganj. He then asked me how many people will turn up at Karimganj. I replied that around 50,000 people were expected. He in a calm voice replied that even if 30,000 people turn up, then also I would be happy. However, more than 2 lakh people turned up in that gathering at Karimganj. After that, his trust in me was more cemented.

I need to mention another incident. One of the cars in my convoy met with an accident in which a policeman was dead and another officer was injured. On reaching Silchar, I got the information that phone call had come from the Prime Minister’s office. I was asked to meet the Prime Minister immediately on my return to Delhi. The next day when I went to meet him, he enquired me about the accident. He called the departmental Secretary and asked him, “When your departmental minister met with an accident, why have I to get this information from other source?”

Can we call such a person just a human being? He was an extraordinary being. I pray that his soul may rest in peace.
