Cyclone Fani likely to hit the Northeast this week, severe storm expected

May 1: The cyclone Fani is likely to hit the Northeastern part of India this week. With the weather changing gradually, there is natural instability in the atmosphere leading to high wind and development of thunder clouds. As per reports of skymetweather, an anti-cyclone is over North Bay of Bengal which is feeding moisture over the northeastern states. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is seen persisting over Bangladesh and its adjoining region. Thus, with the combined effect of both these weather systems, rain and thundershower activities are expected to continue with good intensity for the coming one week.

As per reports by India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ was located at South East of Chennai on Monday morning. It has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm will have direct effect on  Northeast from May 1. By May 5 and 6, the remnants of cyclone Fani will reach Northeast India and during that time the intensity of rainfall activities will increase significantly. Heavy to very heavy spells of rain accompanied with violent lightning strikes and hailstorm in parts will lash the region.

As per weather forecast made by Indian Meteorological Department, Barak Valley will be experiencing generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers till 3 May, 2019. However, on 4 & 5 May, the region will experience rain or thundershowers.

However, as of now, the northeastern states of India i.e. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will be experiencing widespread rain and thundershower activities atleast for a week. The residents of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi too should be prepared for a stormy week ahead.

The weather report added that by May 7, as the weather systems will move away, weather conditions over the Northeast will also start clearing up. This will provide respite to the region with only isolated rains in one or two pockets.
