Bangladesh court grants bail to Chinmoy Das; release unlikely

way2barak, September 7: The High Court (HC) has granted bail to Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesman Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in two cases over vandalism and obstructing police, report agencies.

The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Sunday.

The same bench had previously cleared him for bail on August 3 in two other cases involving vandalism, attack and obstruction of government duty.

Lawyers said Chinmoy cannot be released yet because several other cases against him are still pending.

His lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said Chinmoy faces six criminal cases in total and has now secured HC bail in four.

His bail in the sedition case remains stayed, while the trial in lawyer Saiful Islam Alif’s murder case is underway at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Chinmoy has been in jail since November 25, 2024.

Legal proceedings against him began with a sedition case filed over alleged disrespect to the national flag.

The case, naming 19 suspects, was filed with Chattogram’s Kotwali Police Station on October 31, 2024, by Firoz Khan, the then general secretary of Mohra Ward BNP in Chandgaon.

Chinmoy was arrested in that case in Dhaka on Nov 25, 2024.

He was produced before a Chattogram court the next day, where his bail plea was rejected
