10 years jail sentenced to four persons for drugs possession
way2barak, Feb 23: In a significant ruling, a Special Court under the ND&PS Act, in Aizawl has recently handed down a ten-year jail term to four persons convicted of possession of 1.4 kilograms of metham- phetamine.
The special judge R. Lalduhawmi delivered the verdict, sentencing the prime offender, Zodingliana, also known as Zadingluaia, along with his three accomplices – Samil Ahmed, Vanlalruati, and Zorampari – to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, each defendant was fined Rs 1 lakh under Section 22 of The Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Sub- stances Act, 1985.
Failure to pay the fine will result in Zodingliana facing an additional four months behind bars, while the other three will endure an extra two months in custody.
Furthermore, Samil Ahmed, Vanlalruati, and Zorampari were also sentenced to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment under Section 29 of the ND&PS Act 1985 for their complicity in the crime. They were each fined Rs 1 lakh, and failing to pay will result in an additional two months of incarceration.
However, showing leniency, the court ruled that the sentences for Samil Ahmed, Vanlalruati, and Zorampari in the two counts would run concurrently, resulting in each serving a total of ten years.
The Excise & Narcotics Department had seized 10,000 tablets of methamphetamine from the four individuals on October 28, 2022.
