Human Rights violated at Silchar Detention Camp: AHRC

March 4:Various organisations from Barak Valley have been expressing great concern as regards the living condition of the inmates in the detention camp which is housed inside the Silchar Central Jail. However, the voice of resentment failed to cross the valley and so the inmates went on suffering every day inside the detention camp. However, now the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has also expressed its concern over human rights violations in the Silchar detention camp.

A three-member AHRC team comprising of T Vaiphei (Chairman), N.K.Bora and D.K.Saikia expressed deep concern and opined that the provision of housing both inmates of the detention camp and the inmates of the Silchar Central Jail at the same place is indeed a “gross violation” of human rights. The three-member AHRC team visited the Silchar detention camp on Sunday.

T Vaiphei, chairman of AHRC, said that detainees of the detention camp and jail inmates are not the same and should not be treated in the same way. “It extremely sad that the inmates of the detention camps have been treated like the inmates of the jail. We would ask concerned authorities to look into it,” added Vaiphei. 78 detainees are lodged in the Silchar detention camp at present including self-claimed Bangladeshis and those declared foreigners by the Foreigners’ Tribunal.

The AHRC team further said. “We could see that there are no separate jail manuals for convicts, suspected doubtful citizens and under-trial prisoners. Suspected doubtful citizens and under-trial prisoners cannot be kept along with the convict.”
