Zoology Department of Cachar College celebrates World Environment Day with sensitization lecture on Snakes

way2barak, 5th June :The Department of Zoology, Cachar College Silchar observed World Environment Day with an invited lecture program to spread awareness on Snakes. The session entitled “The Snake Story” was delivered by Trikal Chakrabarty, who is a wildlife conservationist, snake rescuer and program coordinator of Forest Department. He was welcomed by Dr. Nilam Basumatary, Head, Department of Zoology, Cachar College. Initially, Chakrabarty discussed about the various types of snakes, particularly the venomous and non-venomous snakes of this region. He stressed on the King Cobra population residing in the various patches of Barak Valle and suggested the precautions and preventive measures to be adopted in case someone comes across a snake or is bitten by it.

This is to mention here that Barak Valley has a diversity of Cobras and other elapids and thus their conservation is a responsibility of the people. At the end of the session, he presented a documentary on Borail Eco Camp, explaining the functionality of the community run ecotourism venture and lauded the efforts taken up by Tejas Mariswamy, DFO Cachar.

The program was informative for the students, faculty members and wildlife enthusiasts; who also appreciated the efforts of Chakrabarty in saving the lives of many snakes and people altogether.

It is to be mentioned here that Cachar College had organized a series of events in order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of World Environment Day this year. On 29th May the Cachar College hosted a program on Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) which was organized by Wildlife Institute of India, Cachar College and Assam Forest Department. From 2nd June to 5th June 2023, the NSS unit of Cachar College in association with KKHSOU center, Department of Botany, Chemistry, and Zoology organized Inter-college Painting competition, Outreach program (at adopted village Masughat), Plantation and cleanliness drive, Inauguration of Cachar College Eco Club, and Inter-college Quiz Competition. Students across various colleges, NSS and NCC cadets, and faculty members participated in these events making it a great success.
