Colleges in Assam to roll out 4-year undergraduate courses from 2023 onwards: CM

way2barak, Sept.11: Glad that all universities in Assam are preparing to adopt the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 from next year. Colleges will also roll out 4-year undergraduate courses from 2023 onwards. This was stated by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma while attending the closing ceremony of golden jubilee celebration of prestigious Sonari College on Sunday.

As a part of the preparation of National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020), it was decided that every Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will be mandated to constitute a 3-member task force under Chairpersonship of respective Registrar/ Principal of all the State/ Private Universities of Assam and Government/ Provincialised Colleges of Assam. This was stated in a letter issued by the Director of Higher Education (DHE), Assam on 28 April, 2022.

Earlier, in pursuance to the Cabinet decision taken on 24 November, 2021, (item No.5) in the meeting held in the Conference Room of Deputy Commissioner’s office, Bongaigaon, the matter relating to restructuring of school education system from 10+2 to 5+3+3+4 pattern for governance and implementation under National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020) has been approved. The notification was issued on 14 December, 2021 by Dr B. Kalyan Chakraborty, Principal Secretary to the Govt of Assam, Education Department.

Meanwhile, a day-long Conference of the Vice Chancellors of Assam on implementation of NEP 2020 was organised on 8 September, 2022 by Raj Bhavan at Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara, Guwahati. Governor of Assam, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi chaired the conference in presence of Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. Education Minister, Dr Ranoj Pegu, Education Adviser Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, eminent academic experts across the country, Vice Chancellors of all the Universities of Assam, Officials from the Higher Education Department were present in the conference. The conference on implementation of NEP 2020 in Assam was organised as a follow up of Varanasi conclave. Organized by the Ministry of Education in association with University Grants Commission and Banaras Hindu University.
