Dedicated Domestic Air Cargo Complex to be established at Silchar Airport

way2barak, Sept.1: A permanent facility for a Dedicated Domestic Air Cargo Complex is being established in an area of 376 sqm with annual handling capacity of 13,723 MT at Kumbirgram Airport, Silchar for cargo clearance. This was informed by General VK Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Civil Aviation, Government of India in a letter addressed to Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy.

Infact, MP Rajdeep Roy on 26 July, 2022 wrote a letter to Minister VK Singh wherein he wrote, “I would like to bring to your notice an issue related to cargo clearance at Kumbirgram Airport, Silchar, Assam. Kumbirgram Airport, Silchar First Security Vetting for Cargo through Terminal Building was carried by BCAS – Bureau of Civil Aviation Security…. A building was converted and all the major infrastructure changes was carried out as per direction of BCAS. Till date approval for the same is also awaited. I would be thankful if you can kindly see into the matter and take appropriate steps to reopen the cargo service at the earliest for the benefit of general public.”

It is in response to this letter, that Gen VK Singh informed Dr Roy that a permanent facility for a Dedicated Domestic Air Cargo Complex is being established in an area of 376 sqm with annual handling capacity of 13,723 MT at Kumbirgram Airport, Silchar. 

In his letter, Gen Singh further wrote, “The Airport Director has confirmed that XBIS (X-Ray Baggage Inspection System) is available with Airports Authority of India (AAI).Tendering process for procurement and installation of CCTV Camera is already underway and is likely to be completed by Oct 2022. Once CCTV Cameras are installed, BCAS will carry out the final security vetting for cargo clearance and AAICLAS will take necessary action for commissioning the complex with Regulated Agent (RA) facility along with the requisite CISF deployment. We are committed to strengthen the air connectivity network for cargo logistics in Assam and the North East in general. Trust this addresses your concern.”
