We try our level best for peace & diffuse minor tensions through discussion: Mizoram Home Minister

Aug. 9: “More than a year there was no high tension or escalation of the situation in the border areas. Ofcourse, there were tensions here and there, but these were small ones. And whenever there were tensions, we always try our level best to diffuse these tensions.” This was stated by Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana on the sidelines of the ministerial level meeting convened in Aizawl between Assam and Mizoram on Tuesday to discuss the inter-state border issues.

“In case of any minor issues, we instructed the concerned Deputy Commissioner to have a discussion with his counterpart in Cachar or Hailakandi. In this way, we try to nip the bud of the trouble in the border area. We are trying our level best for peace from the Secretariat as well as in the field. As per our discussion in the video conference, we have instructed our concerned DC’s and SP’s to have face to face discussion with their counterpart whenever necessary. We had rounds of discussion in this regard with Mr Atul Bora ji also,” added the Home Minister of Mizoram.

Home Minister Lalchamliana was also hopeful of a fruitful meeting with Assam that would take place in Guwahati during October, 2022, where issues and claims will be deliberated in details. “We have announced in the agreement signed today with Assam that detailed discussion will be held on the issues and the claims. Hopefully we will go further forward in the Guwahati Meeting,” said Home Minister Lalchamliana.

Assam was represented in the said meeting by two of its cabinet ministers, Atul bora and Ashok Singhal; whereas, Mizoram was represented by its Home Minister Lalchamliana and Minister of Public Information Lalruatkime. Commissioner (Border) GD Tripathi also took part in this high level meeting. The meeting which took place at Aizawl Club lasted for more than an hour.

This is the 2nd high level meeting between the two states on the issue of border dispute. It needs mention here that the 1st meeting between the two states on the issue of border dispute took place on 5 August, 2021. Though almost a year have elapsed, but yet the border issue between Assam and Mizoram has not yet been resolved. The areas of Assam which were occupied by Mizoram was not yet recovered by Assam.
