Most dykes on Barak over-topped, water rushing in through breaches at Bagadahar near Berenga

People advised not to venture out except those in essential services

May 19: Due to heavy rainfall for last few days, the water level of river Barak and its tributaries have been increasing alarmingly and daily new areas/ villages are inundated by the flood water and people of this district are coming under the grasp of flood. The water also over-topped in some of the places of the embankments. As per reports, since Thursday noon, water in Bagadahar at Berenga Part III was reported to inundate adjoining areas due to breaches in the nearby dyke. The water was flowing out through the breaches in that dyke in immense speed.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli request public to stay indoors and not to step out of their houses as water levels are rising across the district and more rainfall is also predicted.

Executive Engineer of Silchar WR Division in a WT Message to the Secretary to the Government of Assam, Water Resource Department stated that most of the dykes have over-topped as the water level is rising alarmingly. “The most vulnerable dykes at Bethukandi area, Berenga area, Ringbund area, Bagadahar area at Silchar town are also in threat,” stated the Executive Engineer.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Bagadahar – Bethukandi Road from Ch. 1300.00 M to 2100.00 M (Vulnerable water Resource Dyke portion) is closed for all types of Vehicular Traffic until further order to avoid any type of vibration on the Dyke portion. This is as per decision taken in the meeting held at Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) office today in presence of Deputy Commissioner, Cachar and MLA Silchar constituency. This was stated in a notification issued by Executive Engineer PWD, Silchar & Udharbond Territorial Road Division, Silchar on 18 May, 2022.
