Don’t go for panic buying, there is enough stock; refrain from spreading rumours in social media: DC Cachar

May 17: As the water of all rivers in Cachar district is flowing above the danger level, people have been captivated in the grip of fear and tension. Many have become scared and have started hoarding of essential commodities. Many scrupulous shopkeepers and merchants too were alleged to hike price of commodities. It is in this backdrop, to clear the air and to let the public know about the ground level situation, a press briefing was organised in the conference hall of Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) on Tuesday evening.

The press was addressed by MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli. During the press briefing, the trio urged upon the public not to panic as the administration is striving its level best to ensure minimum loss. They informed that the various departments are working 24×7 so that the situation can be tackled well.

MP Dr Roy and DC Jalli urged upon the public not to encourage unscrupulous businessman by buying vegetables and food products at a higher price. People were asked to report any such activities at 7002178162 (helpline). DC Cachar further stated that there is enough supply stocks, be it food grains, petroleum products, medicines or any other essential commodities in the district. MLA Silchar urged upon the people not to promote rumours without verification, especially in social media.

“Government’s priority is to bring people to safe flood relief camps and to ensure their safety and security, all agencies are working relentlessly towards it. The supplies in the relief camps are adequate and 5-days of food grains have been already delivered. The Health Department doctors are already on the job at all the camps,” stated the Deputy Commissioner.

DC Cachar further said, “Please be aware that there is no UP potato available in the market. Bengal potato is available which is in Cold Storage for a price of Rs 23 which sells in wholesale at Rs 25 and comes for retail at Rs 30. There is enough in the market for the next two months. There are enough essential stocks maintained by district administration. Nobody needs to hoard anything. No need to do any panic buying and wasting your hard earned resources. District administration is constantly working for you.”
