Municipal elections not to be held in Silchar now: Assam Cabinet

State Election Commission to hold elections in Silchar Municipality as a Municipal Corporation only after delimitation

Feb. 2: In the weekly Assam Cabinet on 2 February, several key decisions pertaining to providing land to the underprivileged, improving road infrastructure, funds for land acquisition for Jorhat Airport expansion & construction of Tamulpur Medical College, etc., among others were taken. The Cabinet Meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. 

KEY DECISIONS:

Improving Rural Infra:

Approval to sanction of Rs. 958 cr to upgrade 114 road-cum-embankments and construction of 6 rural bridges in Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Charaideo, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara- Mankachar & Tinsukia districts

Upgrading Vital Roads:

Rs. 1,031 crore approved to improve & upgrade road projects :

  • Kokrajhar to Rupsi Airport Road
  • Gohpur- Dholpur road via Ghagrabasti road from Kokchabari to Hawajan
  • Dirakgate to Penegree road from Dirakgate to Bijulibon
  • Rowta to Misamari road (Rowta to Kanakata section)
  • Rowta to Misamari road (Kanakata to Phulogori section)

Tamulpur Medical College & Hospital:

450 cr approved for construction of new Medical College & Hospital in Tamulpur district

Land Rights to Under-priviledged:

Settlement of land to 103 financially weak families of Mariani town via realisation of premium on a par with Guwahati Metropolitan Area.

Elections in Silchar Municipality:

Apart from Guwahati Municipal Corporation, it was also recently approved to upgrade Silchar and Dibrugarh Municipal Boards to the status of Corporation. In the Cabinet meeting held on 2 February, it was decided that the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar will be asked to submit proposal for expansion and delimitation at the earliest. It was further decided that the State Election Commission be informed that election should not be conducted in Silchar during the soon-to-be held municipal poll in the state.

Improving Administrative Efficiency:

Approval to review of Assam Rules of Executive Business-1968 to improve administrative efficiency and governance

Expansion of Jorhat Airport:

2156 cr for acquisition of 124 bigha 14.92 lessa private land to facilitate expansion of Jorhat (Rowriah) Airport by Airports Authority of India (AAI)

Panel to Finalise State Emblem: 

Constituted a Cabinet Committee headed by Ministers Dr. Ranoj Pegu & Shri Keshab Mahanta for finalisation of State Emblem to create a distinctive symbol that will signify and visually represent Assam

PM Gati Shakti: 

A high level task force will be constituted to oversee the proper implementation of PM Gati Shakti.
