Barak Valley registers 699 Covid +ve cases on Monday, 433 discharged & 6 deaths reported

There are 2,871 active Covid cases in Barak Valley

Jan 17: The number of coronavirus positive cases are gradually increasing in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Monday, the number of fresh cases in the valley increased once again. A total of 699 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. Further, during the day, 433 patients were cured and subsequently discharged in the three districts of the valley. At present, there are 2,871 active Covid cases in Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Sunday, Barak Valley registered 359 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Monday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 403 positive cases   (It was 289 on Sunday)
  • Karimganj: 206 positive cases (It was 40 on Sunday)
  • Hailakandi:  90 positive cases (It was 30 on Sunday)

The number of coronavirus cases in Cachar district is gradually increasing. The District Health Department of Cachar updated the Covid-19 data of Monday at 6 PM. As per the latest data, the daily Covid count in Cachar crossed the 400-mark on Monday. A total of 403 persons were found positive in the district on 17 January. Also, 292 patients were discharged (263 from home & 29 from hospital) during the day. With this, the number of active cases in Cachar has reached 1,731 out of which, 1,582 are in home isolation whereas 149 are admitted in various hospitals of the district. On Sunday, 289 persons were found positive in Cachar.

As per the updated data, a total of 666 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 170 persons were found positive, whereas 233 were detected positive out of 244 RT-PCR Tests. With this, the total number of Covid cases since 1 Jan 2022 reached 2,686 whereas during this phase, 948 patients were discharged. This data was provided by the district health department from 12 noon of 16 January to 12 noon of 17 January, 2022.

There has been a gradual rise in the number of daily positive cases in Cachar district. The last 24 hours (5 PM on 16 January to 5 PM on 17 January) witnessed the death of 03 Covid-19 positive patients at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), 01 at Green Heals Hospital, Silchar, 01 at Cachar Cancer Hospital and 01 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.

The deceased were identified as:

  1. Jayanti Sen Gupta (65) from Malugram, Silchar tested Covid positive and was admitted at SMCH on 15 January (12.30 PM). The patient, however, breathed her last at 6.45 PM on 16 January, 2022. She was suffering from acute kidney disease and pneumonia.
  2. Kalipada Bhowmik (93) from Meherpur, Silchar got admitted at SMCH on 6 January, 2022. He passed away at 6.45 AM on 17 January. He was suffering from Covid pneumonia, acute kidney injury and hypertension.
  3. Bijoy Kumar Singh (21) from Bahadurpur in Cachar took admission at SMCH on 10 January, 2022. He died at 9.15 AM on 17 January. He was suffering from acute kidney injury, tebercular meningitis and Covid pneumonia.
  4. Abdul Halim Barbhuiya (54) from Harinagar Part-II (Katigorah) in Cachar took admission at Green Heals Hospital, Silchar at 10.30 on 16 January. The patient passed away at 2.30 PM on 17 January. He was double vaccinated. He was suffering from brain stroke with hemorrhage & hypertension. The patient was fully unconscious during admission. As per protocol, RAT was done and he was detected as Covid-19 positive.
  5. Narayan Das from Malugram, Silchar suffered a major stroke 4 days ago and was taken to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong. There he was operated. After this, the patient was detected as Covid positive. He died at early morning on 17 January. The family members took permission from Cachar district administration and the dead body is on the way to Silchar. He will be cremated tonight in Silchar.
  6. Shibani Rani Mallick from Dwarbond Cachar was admitted at Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre where she expired at night on 17 January.

Prior to this, another Covid patient, Lukman Ali Laskar (58) from Lakhipur in Cachar died at SMCH on 16 January.

Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH informed that till 5 PM on 17 January, there were 39 Covid-19 active patients at Silchar Medical College. Further, 03 patients were put under ventilator support, and 13 in oxygen support. In the last 24 hours, 12 Covid positive patients were admitted at SMCH and 04 were discharged.

On Monday, Hailakandi registered 90 (86 RAT & 04 RT-PCR) new COVID-19 cases. The district has altogether has 518 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 955 RAT tests and 51 RT-PCR tests were done. 63 patients were discharged during the day. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 8,697 (both 1st & 2nd wave).

As of now, a total of 4,652 patients were discharged. It needs mention here that 30 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Sunday. Till date, 51 persons died due to Covid-19 in Hailakandi district.  A total of 1,933 persons were vaccinated on Sunday.

There was a sharp rise in the number of Covid patients in Karimganj district. Karimganj registered 206 fresh COVID cases on Monday. The district has currently 622 active COVID cases, while 78 patients were discharged on Monday. 1,262 swab samples were collected during the day. It needs mention here that 40 persons were detected positive in Karimganj on Sunday.

On Monday, out of 64,919 tests, 6,982 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 6,53,717. The positivity rate in the state is 10.75 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,491 positive cases during the day. Further, on Monday, 11 died in the state due to COVID-19. The death toll in the state stands at 6,217. The recovery rate is 95.18 percent. Also, 2,281 persons were discharged during the day. There are at present 23,948 active Covid patients in the state.

After days of significant rise in its daily case load, India today has reported a marginal drop in its covid curve. India has reported over 258,089 new covid-19 cases which is 13,000 less than Sunday’s figures., according to health ministry’s updated data on Monday. The death toll, on the other hand, continued on an upward trajectory with as many as 385 people dying of the disease in a day.  Of these, there were a total of 8,209 cases of the Omicron variant, which is now present in all 29 states and union territories. The country’s active cases now stands at 16,56,341, which is 4.43 per cent of the total infections. The daily positivity rate increased to 19.65 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate stood at 14.41 per cent.
