Bike borne miscreants snatch gold chains from several persons in Silchar

Nov. 1: Incidents of chain, money & mobile snatching has become a regular affair in Silchar. During the last 24 hours, many such incidents were reported from multiple places in Silchar town. This has given rise to fear in the minds of the people who are suffering from insecurity. Just on Saturday, a businessman was robbed of Rs.3.90 lakh at Sonai Road by 2 bike-borne miscreants.

Sunday seemed to be a nightmare for many people in Silchar as the gang of chain snatchers were active in various parts of the town. At about 10.30 in the morning. Amit Kumar Goala, a resident of Swarupananda Sarani, opposite Matri Bhawan Bibaha Bhawan at Hailakandi Road just reached his home. He was about to stand his bike near his gate. All of a sudden two bike-borne miscreants came very fast and snatched his gold chain and immediately fled away.

At around 12 noon, bike-borne miscreants snatched a gold chain from the neck of a 54-year old woman just opposite the immersion ghat (Sadarghat). The victim identified as Sabitri Roy is a resident of Rongpur. She was purchasing vegetables when the incident took place. The miscreants were on a black pulsar bike and were wearing helmets.

On the same afternoon, at about 12.30 PM, Gita Roy, a 55-year aged lady was just about to enter her lane near Public School. In the same manner, miscreants riding a bike suddenly snatched her gold chain and fled away. She struggled hard and somehow managed to retain a small portion of the chain in her hand while the snatchers took away the rest.

On Sunday, another such incident occurred at National Highway at about 4 in the afternoon. A 30-year old youth was on his bike, when suddenly another bike came from his behind. The pillion rider suddenly snatched his gold chain from his neck and fled away at a great speed.

Similar incidents on Sunday were also reported from College Road when a lady on a scooty was robbed off her gold chain by 2 snatchers who came from her behind on a bike. In a similar modus operandi, two miscreants snatched away a gold chain from a girl on a scooty near Gandhi Bagh.

Local residents expressed deep anguish over such repeated incidents of robbery in Silchar. They demanded that strict vigil should be done by the police so that such anti-social elements could be nabbed at the earliest. A retired school teacher who resides in Public School Road said, “Silchar is now a heaven for anti-socials. What is the law enforcing authorities doing? I am now really scared to even stand near my house wearing any gold ornaments.” Concerned residents have urged that strict vigil should be done by the police so that such anti-social elements could be nabbed at the earliest.
