Karbi Peace Accord signed; Rs 5 lakh to be paid to families who lost their kin in agitations

Sept. 4: The Centre signed the tripartite “Karbi Peace Accord” on Saturday in New Delhi. The peace accord was signed in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and the representatives of Karbi outfits. The Karbis are a major ethnic group of Assam, dotted by several factions and splinters.

After the signing of the accord, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Today Assam has made a giant leap forward. Signing of this tripartite Agreement marks the end of decades old crisis and ensures territorial integrity of Assam. I thank all stakeholders, especially Karbi ethnic groups, for having come together to ensure this momentous decision. I am happy & grateful to all. All signatory armed groups shall abjure the path of violence, surrender their weapons and disband their organisations within one month of signing of the Agreement. All camps occupied by these groups shall be vacated forthwith.”

The Government of India (GOI) may allocate Rs 500 crore (Rs 100 cr per annum) for development of infrastructure in Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) area. Additionally the GOA will contribute Rs 500 crore for development of the area. The Government of Assam will provide financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to each of the next of kin of persons who lost their lives in agitations related to autonomous state demand and have not yet been compensated in any manner. The Government of Assam will consider favourably the proposal of KAAC to notify Karbi as the official language of KAAC. However English, Hindi & Assamese will continue to be used for official purposes.

Modi government is committed to resolving the decades-old crisis, ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam,” said Home Minister Amit Shah. Hailing the signing of the historic Karbi Anglong Agreement, Union minister and former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I want to thank Modi government in centre which is committed to resolving the decades-old crisis, ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam. I want to thank the CM of Assam also.”
