‘Mareya was quite focused,’ recalls her former teacher on being selected as Flying Officer in IAF

Aug 19: It’s again a female who has brought laurels for Cachar district. Mareya Begum, daughter of Abdul Helim Choudhury and Heijabun Nessa of Moragang, Cachar, Assam has been selected as Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Meteorological Branch. It’s a moment of pride for the people of Lakhipur as well as Barak Valley.

Mareya Begum began her educational career from Emmanuel English Higher Secondary School, Pailapool, where she studied upto Class V. From there, she was admitted at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV),Pailapool where she studied till Higher Secondary. She did her graduation with Physics honours from GC College, Silchar in 2017. Thereafter, She persuaded post graduation in Physics from Assam University. She is also an NCC ‘C’ certificate holder. Before being selected for the coveted post of Flying Officer at IAF, Mareya worked as Post- Graduate Teacher of Physics at JNV, Karimganj. Finally, she cleared that Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT). It was then that she had to go through 5-day long test of Service Selection Board (SSB) in Varanasi, followed by medical examination in Delhi. She successfully crossed all hurdles to make a place for her in the IAF.

One of her former teacher, Dr Apratim Nag said, “Mareya graduated with Physics Honours from G C College in 2017. She was a very polite, humble and well-mannered girl. Having seen her from close quarters for three years, I can say, without an iota of doubt, that she is destined to reach great heights. I still remember my first class with them in B.Sc 1st semester. She candidly admitted that she took pride in the fact that Bikram Koiri, IAS, was her senior in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Pailapool and drew inspiration from his achievement. Today she herself is an inspiration for others. Talked to her a few hours back. She seems quite focused.”
