Water logging: Slow pace of work adds to residents’ agony at Ambicapatty; delegation meets SMB authority

Aug. 10: A few spell of showers snatches sleep from the eyes of the residents of Chourangi point at Ambicapatty, Silchar. The recently constructed cross culvert at Chourangi Point has been in the eye of a storm. Like many other parts of Silchar, clogged drains result in artificial floods at this part of the town. The level of accumulated water after rainfall has gradually increased over the years. Locals have alleged that the abnormal height of the culvert and choked drains are two major causes of water logging at Ambicapatty.

When such a dismal scenario of mini flood occurred at Ambicapatty on 21- 22 July, 2021, the residents blocked the road and raised a protest in demand of a just civic life. As a result, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Board (SMB), MLA Silchar, PWD Engineers along with concerned departmental officials visited the spot and assured the people of the locality of an early plausible solution.  Finally, it was decided that a comprehensive sketch of the area would be prepared by the PWD (Roads) and SMB within a week. It was then that the local residents would be consulted and a practical solution of the problem of water logging would be arrived at.

However, since then, more than a fortnight elapsed, but nothing concrete was done as yet and the people of thee area continued to pass their days in great anxiety. Though, work by the concerned department has started there, but that too is going on in a snail’s pace. These conditions were upholded by the residents of larger Ambicapatty area before Jesicca Lalsim, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Board on Tuesday.

Later on, expressing his views, former Municipal Chairperson, Tamal Kanti Banik, who accompanied the delegation said, “We the residents of Ambicapatty met Jesicca Lalsim, Executive Officer of SMB and briefed her about the problems faced by the people of the locality. She gave us a patient hearing. She immediately directed the high officials to complete the work on a priority basis and also to maintain the quality. The sincerity expressed by the Executive Officer has provided us with a new hope of getting the work completed at the earliest.”
