544 persons test Covid +ve in Barak Valley on Tuesday; 8 deaths registered
Active cases 3,091 in Barak Valley
May 18: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Tuesday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less. A total of 544 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Monday, Barak Valley registered 721 positive cases. At present, there are 3,091 active Covid cases in Barak Valley.
Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Tuesday in Barak Valley:
- Cachar: 342 positive cases (It was 453 on Monday)
- Karimganj: 86 positive cases (It was 148 on Monday)
- Hailakandi: 116 positive cases (It was 120 on Monday)
A total of 342 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Monday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 3,789 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 218 persons were found positive, whereas 124 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert on Tuesday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 5,082 in 2021, whereas during the year, 3,458 patients were discharged. The number of active cases in Cachar has reached 1,586.
On Tuesday evening, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) informed that 06 Covid positive patients died in last 24 hours at SMCH. However, 2 more Covid positive patients on 18 May also died at Valley Hospital & Research Centre, Meherpur, Silchar. Their detailed reports were forwarded to the State Death Audit Board as per the protocol. With this, a total of 08 Covid patients lost their lives, two at Valley Hospital and 06 at SMCH. Both the two deceased at valley hospital are from Cachar district.
The 02 Covid positive patients who died on Tuesday at Valley Hospital are: Binay Deb Roy (75) from Pangram Part III of Udharbond in Cachar district and Taramoni Choudhury (78) from Old Lakhipur Road, Silchar.
Earlier in the evening, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH informed about the deaths of 06 Covid-19 positive patients at SMCH in last 24 hours. The 06 deceased were identified as: Sandhya Goud (51) from Paloirbasti in Cachar, Ronobijoy Bin (65) from from Choto Dudhpatil in Cachar district, Parimal Choudhury (62) from Rangirkhari, Silchar, Islam Uddin Laskar (74) from Hailakandi district, Khounish Ranjan Bhattacharjee (76) from Tarapur, Silchar and Nur Khatun Choudhury (62) from Uttar Joushnabad in Hailakandi district.
Hailakandi registered 116 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. Of the 116 positive cases detected on Tuesday, 112 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 04 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 824 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,774 RAT tests and 98 RT-PCR tests were done. 52 patients were discharged during the day. It needs mention here that 120 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Monday. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 4,733.
As of now, in the 18 plus category, 6,094 persons have received the 1st dose of the vaccine. In the 45 plus category, 47,010 have received the 1st dose of the vaccine, whereas, 15,120 have been administered the 2nd dose in Hailakandi district.
Karimganj registered 86 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 6,090. Of the 86 active cases detected on Tuesday, 68 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and 18 under RT-PCR. It needs mention here that on Monday, 148 persons were found positive in Karimganj, the biggest single day spike in the district, since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The district has currently 681 active COVID-19 cases while 103 patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation on Tuesday. 2,596 swab samples were collected on Tuesday. Altogether 2,53,325 samples have been tested so far. 15 persons with high risk contacts traced and tested on Tuesday. Five containment zones have come up in Karimganj town.
On Tuesday, out of 90,251 tests, 5,835 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 3,40,858. The positivity rate in the state is 6.47 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 921 positive cases during the day. Further, on Tuesday, 73 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 2,344. On Tuesday, 4,311 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,90,774 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged.
Further, during the day, 73 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 73 deceased, 16 are from Kamrup Metro; 07 from Kamrup Rural; 6 each from Cachar & Dibrugarh; 5 each from Hojai & Sonitpur; 4 from Barpeta; 3 each from Darrang & Nagaon; 2 each from Baksha, Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Lakhimpur & Udalguri; 1 each from Biswanath, Goalpara, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Morigaon & Tinsukia. The death tally of the state now stands at 2,344.
