52.80% voters turnout recorded in Guwahati Municipal Corporation election

April 22: The election to the 60 seats of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) took place on Friday. 52.80% voters turnout was recorded during the GMC polls. The voting was held for 57 out of 60 wards under GMC and a total of 197 candidates are in the fray. The BJP had fielded candidates in 53 seats, out of which three were elected uncontested. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad contested in seven wards.

In this election, a total of 757 polling stations were set up out of which 80 polling stations were managed exclusively by women polling officials. For the first time, EVMs were used in GMC Election. Voting started at 7.30 am and concluded at 4.30 pm today. No untoward incidents like booth capturing or similar poll related violence took place and the election completed peacefully.

The Congress has put up candidates in 54 wards, the Aam Aadmi Party in 38, Assam Jatiya Parishad in 25 and the CPI(M) in four. 19 others, including Independents, are also in the fray. The counting of votes will be held on April 24 at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre and the result will be declared the same day.
