40-member committee to study implementation of National Education Policy in Assam: HBS
August 1: Recently, the Union Cabinet has approved the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 with an aim to introduce several changes in the Indian education system – from the school to college level.
It is in this connection that a 40-member committee will be formed to study the implementation of the National Education Policy in the state of Assam. The committee will start functioning within seven days. This committee will be asked to prepare their recommendations by 31 December. This was stated during a press briefing by State Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati. This 40-member committee shall will be divided into various sub-groups among themselves and these sub-committees shall take up individual issues mentioned in the NEP. This committee shall work under the Chairmanship of Principal Secretary, Education. The state government will in all probability come up with a blue print on the basis of the recommendation of this committee in January, 2021.
The minister said, “If we are to implement the recommendations prescribed by the NEP, 2020 then there should be structural change in the existing system. This new committee will study the situation and recommend the changes.”
The minister termed the NEP to be a historic decision and said that no student up to class 12 will be deprived of education. “The NEP 2020 aims at making “India a global knowledge superpower”, said the minister.
The NEP cleared by the Cabinet is only the third major revamp of the framework of education in India since independence. Thetwo earlier education policies were brought in 1968 and 1986.
