Special screening for Assam’s 202 cancer patients stranded in Mumbai: Himanta

April 30: Many cancer patients from Assam goes for treatment in Mumbai, Delhi and other parts of the country. This is a regular feature. But ill luck prevailed for those who got stranded in other states, when nationwide lockdown was declared from 24 April midnight. Though Assam government is in regular touch  with these patients, many of whom are also staying at Assam House, Mumbai. Assam government has also provided Rs.25,000 each to such patients of the state who got stuck outside as they had gone for purpose of treatment.

But the thing which came as a matter of grave concern for the state government is that 3 such cancer patients stuck in Delhi were found COVID-19 positive. Without any delay, the Assam government took up this matter with its Maharashtra counterpart. On Thursday, the state government took proactive steps of conducting special screening for Assam’s stranded cancer patients in Mumbai. A private lab in Mumbai has been assigned the task of screening of 202 cancer patients stuck now in Mumbai.

Taking to his twitter handle, state Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “After 3 of our cancer patients were found #COVID19 positive in Delhi, we took proactive steps of conducting special screening for Assam’s stranded cancer patients in Mumbai. The screening of 202 patients by a private lab shall allay apprehensions. We hope for best. #AssamCares.”
