₹10 crore allocated to upgrade 7 colleges into universities in Assam, but none in Barak Valley
₹15 crore each granted to Assam University & Tezpur University
March 16: The Assam Budget 2022 has announced setting up of new universities and upgradation of seven colleges into universities. An amount of Rs.10 crore each college was earmarked in the state budget for this purpose. Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on Wednesday presented the state budget for the year 2022-23.
The seven colleges for which budget allocation was made to upgrade them into universities are: Sibsagar College, Kokhrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, Jagannath Barooah College, North Lakhimpur College, Handique Girls’ College and Nagaon College.
It needs mention here that Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy during a press meet on 28 December, 2021 at his residence informed that he had met Dr Ranouj Pegu, Education Minister of Assam and discussed in Guwahati on 27 November, 2021 and urged upon him to upgrade Guru Charan College, Silchar, Cachar College, Silchar and Karimganj College of Barak Valley to University. However, no college in Barak Valley could find a place in state budget announced on 16 March, 2022.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog in her budget speech announced that NIDA Fund of Rs.50 crore each will be given to six universities, which are: Majuli University, Rabindranath Tagore University, Bhattadev University, Madhabdev University, Birangana Sati Sadhini State University and Aniruddhadev Sports University.
Moreover, other institutions for which money was earmarked in the budget are: ₹25 crore to Gauhati University for start-up ecosystem, ₹15 crore each to Assam University and Tezpur University. ₹25 crore to Assam Agricultural University. TISS Guwahati to get ₹15 crore for infrastructure boost and ₹10 cr for building science block in Haflong College.
