Cachar Police on the streets to detect ‘drink & drive’ cases; over ₹80,000 fine collected for traffic violation on Thursday

Dec. 30: Since the declaration of “no drink & drive” on the eve of new year by the Chief Minister, Assam Police has taken to the streets a day prior to 31 December and is busy in enforcing traffic rules. In Cachar district too, traffic police forces are on the streets to detect ‘drink & drive’ cases.

Speaking to the media, a traffic official of Cachar Police informed that the cops are spread in various parts of Silchar. He said that the step taken by the Chief Minister is indeed laudable which would prevent the accidents to a great extent. “All two-wheeler riders should wear helmet for his/her own safety. We are now strictly ensuring compliance of this rule. Those driving 4-wheelers should also put on seat belt.” He further informed that the traffic police is constantly monitoring vehicles since 5 PM. A fine of around Rs.80,000 was realised for traffic violation on Thursday evening from Silchar.

As regards cases of ‘drink & drive’, the traffic official informed that they are keeping a strict vigil on this aspect. From 5 PM till Thursday late evening, only one such case was detected. Necessary action will be taken. In ‘drink & drive’ cases, their license will be seized and forwarded to the DTO for necessary action. Further, a case will also registered for the offence. He further stated that on 31 December also, police teams will check in various parts of Silchar to detect ‘drink & drive’ and other traffic violation cases.

Earlier, the Chief minister stated that anyone caught consuming alcohol and driving on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1 will be detained. The CM further stated that those found to involve in drink and drive on the new year’s eve will not be put behind the bars but would rather be detained for the whole night. Such persons will be allowed to go home only in the morning. Himanta Biswa Sarma further added that even commuters accompanying the drunk driver will be detained as well.
