Displaced Bru tribals from Mizoram to be settled permanently in Tripura

January 16: The Centre signed an agreement to resolve the 22-year-old crisis of displaced Bru tribals from Mizoram in Tripura and announced that over 30,000 Bru migrants will now permanently settle in Tripura. The agreement was signed between the Union government, the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram and Bru-Reang representatives in the national Capital on Thursday. Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah presided over the signing of the agreement.

The Brus are spread over an area across parts of Mizoram, Tripura and the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. In 1997, after ethnic violence in the region, thousands of Brus were forced out of their homes and settled in Tripura. Under the agreement, Bru tribals will now live in Tripura permanently.

Each Bru-Reang displaced family shall get residential plot, Rs 4 lakh as fixed deposits, free ration and Rs 5000 aid per month for 2 years. They will also get Rs 1.5 lakh towards construction cost for their houses, on land to be given by Tripura. The government has also declared Rs 600 crore package for resettling them.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma besides Tripura royal scion Pradyot Deb Barman were present at the event.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who played a crucial role in hammering out a solution between the Bru people and the governments of Tripura and Mizoram, said, “Heartiest congratulations to our tribal brothers & sisters of Bru-Reang community as now you will get all rights.
