NIA court acquits Akhil Gogoi of all charges

July 1: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati on Thursday acquitted activist and MLA Akhil Gogoi and three others in a sedition case along with other charges. With this, Akhil has got discharged in both the NIA cases registered against him. Apart from him, Dhajya Konwar, Manas Konwar and Bitu Sonowal have also been acquitted by the NIA court. The NIA court said there is insufficient material against Gogoi to frame charges against him.

Akhil Gogoi’s advocate said the investigating agency has presented a “protected witness”, in the Chandmari case for which NIA have filed an additional chargesheet in the Special NIA Court in Guwahati. Akhil Gogoi was arrested in December 2019 during the anti-CAA protests in Assam. Since then, the Akhil Gogoi was in jail. Akhil Gogoi will walk out of jail if no new case is registered against him.
