College Student Arrested in Hailakandi for Allegedly Drowning His Mother in Pond

Lala, June 16 : In a horrifying case of matricide that has sent shockwaves through the region, a 22-year-old college student was arrested in Lala, Hailakandi district, for allegedly killing his own mother by drowning her in a pond following a heated domestic dispute.
The tragic incident took place on Sunday in the Umednagar area of Ward No. 3 under S.P. Road, Lala. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Manju Rani Nath.
As per a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, Tapan Nath, a resident of Umednagar, a fierce argument broke out between Manju Rani and her elder son, Mimdeep Nath. The quarrel reportedly intensified, leading to a violent outburst. In a fit of rage, Mimdeep allegedly dragged his mother out of the house towards a nearby pond located within the premises. There, he is accused of forcefully pushing her into the water and holding her down with his foot until she drowned.
Alarmed by the commotion and desperate cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot and rescued Manju Rani from the pond. She was immediately taken to Lala Primary Health Centre, where the attending doctor declared her dead on arrival.
Lala Police swiftly arrived at the scene and apprehended Mimdeep Nath. The victim’s body was sent to S.K. Roy Civil Hospital, Hailakandi, for post-mortem examination. Based on the complaint filed by Tapan Nath, a case has been officially registered and an investigation launched.
It is noteworthy that Manju Rani Nath’s late husband, Mannik Nath, had served as a police constable in Hailakandi and passed away a few months ago. Mimdeep Nath is their eldest son.
