Ordeal of a father during flood at Chengcoorie Road, Silchar & apathy of the system

July 2: I am Bikramjit Dhar. I live in Chengcoorie Road, Silchar where flood water level is still 4-5 feet as on today (1-7-2022). We have no electricity, no drinking water since last 13 days. Somehow, we managed to get drinking water from people/ organisations who came to distribute relief in our area.

However, I had to face the worst situation in my life till day. Last night, my one-year-old daughter started to suffer from diarrhea. I am water clogged and unable to move out without a boat. At 11 pm, I tried to get help from 108 Ambulance, DDMA, SDRF, Fire brigade and police control room. But everybody denied to extend help at night. All informed that the authority has denied permission to go for rescue operation at night.

Finally I called DC Madam at midnight, but she didn’t respond to my call. Without any further delay, I along with my wife and my 1-year-old daughter started to walk along the flooded street, where the water level was 4.5 feet approximately. We walked for a distance of around 2 km to find a police patrol van, which finally took us to hospital at 2:30 am.

At last. I was able to admit my kid at NICU in a nursing home with severe viral diarrhea. I could not have saved my daughter, if I were to depend on Administration for rescue and help. I thanked God for giving me strength and I still wonder where the hell am I living where I cannot get medical emergency help at such a situation!

Baby admitted at NICU

It’s needless to say that we cannot expect anything from Administration at such an emergency situation. Forget about boat, I didn’t get an ambulance at that time. It is worth mentioning that I never faced such poor and faulty administrative system.
