Sporadic violence erupts in Sonai after declaration of Municipal poll result
March 9: Violence erupted shortly after the results of Municipal Board Election was declared on Wednesday. which There are a total of 11 wards under Sonai Municipal Board. Voting was held in 10 wards of Sonai, out of which, Ward No. 11,5, 3, 4 and 1 were won by BJP candidates. AIUDF could register their victory in Ward No. 3, 9 & 10. The independent candidates were able to win Ward No. 6 & 8. It needs mention here that the BJP candidate in Ward No 7 was already declared elected unopposed.
As per reports, after the declaration of the poll results, the supporters of AIUDF candidate from Ward No. 10, Nur Ahmed Barbhuiya started their preparation to take out a rally in order to welcome him. However, it was alleged that some supporters of the defeated Congress candidate of this ward came into confrontation with the supporters of the victorious AIUDF candidate and also stopped their rally.
This gave birth to chaos among the two groups just at the main entrance of Sonai. Soon attack and counter- attack took place there. As per reports, a few vehicles were vandalised due to stone pelting. Immediately, police forces along with CRPF reached the spot. Superintendent of Police Ramandeep Kaur also reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
It needs mention here that counting of votes for Sonai Municipal Board came to an end in which the BJP has emerged as the single majority party and is all set to form the board. The counting of votes took place on Wednesday at Government Boys HS School, Silchar. The counting started at 8 AM and it was completed by 10 AM.
